Guidelines and Assistance

WHAT DOES GRIM OAK SHIELD DO?

Grim Oak Shield is a non-profit organization which was created to help authors and freelance artists who have suffered injury or illness and are in need of financial assistance to recover from the medical debt which occurred.  As a non-profit organization, Grim Oak Press uses all proceeds from book sales, auctions, and monetary donations to create medical debt relief for selected grant recipients.

AM I ELIGIBLE TO BE A GRANT RECIPIENT?

If you are an author or freelance artist whose work constitutes the primary source of income and an injury or illness has created medical debt which may put your career or family at risk, we may be able to help.  In order to be eligible for assistance, an applicant must be:

  • A freelancer.  This includes all persons connected with the artistic or entertainment industry including, but not limited to authors and artists.  A freelancer or freelance worker is a person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any one employer.
  • A professional.  An individual who has committed their creative self to the industry and has derived at least 1/2 of their income over the past three years from their contribution.  All work must be done by the qualified person, and in the United States.
  • Recent injury or illness.  A qualified person must have experienced a recent medical emergency or triggering event that has significantly affected the person's ability to produce or perform work and results in the need for immediate relief or assistance.
  • Legal resident of the United States.  You must be a current legal residence of the United States to be considered.

Applications from commercial artists, crafters, bloggers, hobbyists, or writers, as well as any author or artist whose work did not constitute the primary source of income for the past 3 years, will not be accepted.  Although the need is real and often urgent in all cases, Grim Oak Shield is not authorized for such funding and will not respond to such requests.

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR A GRANT?

In order to be considered as a grant recipient, you must fill out and submit the application form and provide all supporting materials.  Any incomplete application will not be considered.

Required information:

  • Signed copies of household's past 3 years IRS tax return(s)
  • Copies of current medical expenses (doctor and hospital bills)
  • A letter detailing the reasons and need of financial assistance
  • A current resume citing skills, history, affiliations, and references
  • Examples of past and current works

HOW ARE APPLICANTS SELECTED?

The Grim Oak Shield secretary will carefully review all applications.  The secretary may find the applicant does not meet the criteria for becoming a grant recipient.  The decision of the secretary is binding.  The secretary findings are reported to the Grim Oak Shield board for review and consideration during the quarterly grant award meeting.  All information is confidential.  The decision to grant an award and the amount granted by the Grim Oak Shield board is final.

Each grant period has a closing date after which applicants will be automatically held for the next grant period.  The closing date is published on the Grim Oak Shield website.
